The Bristol Story
Inside Travel Group was Founded
Inside Travel Group started life in late 2000 when university friends Alastair Donnelly and Simon King founded InsideJapan Tours. They set up a base in Nailsea (near Bristol) in Alastair’s sister’s old bedroom.
Park House Business Centre
This was our first ‘proper’ officer and was in a serviced office building on Park Street in central Bristol with lovely views of College Green. We moved in with a team of 5 and doubled in size during our time here. Memorable events include becoming members of AITO which is still an important trade association for us.
Lewins House
We took the whole first floor at Lewins House as the UK-based team expanded into double figures. With passenger numbers now in the thousands, these years saw us take on a new booking system to manage our tailormade trips and group tours and help us take our famous ‘info-pack’ travel documents to the next level. Our final year was the year of the Tohoku Earthquake in Japan which saw us raise over £20,000 for Civic Force, who were providing help in the affected areas. We also held our 5th year anniversary party at Brunel’s famous iron ship, the SS Great Britain.
Hanover House
Our move to Hanover House saw us more than double our office space and enabled us to significantly upgrade our IT systems. Customer numbers grew to over 10,000 and we won the prestigious Editor's Choice Award at The Times Travel Awards 2018. These years saw us launch our InsideAsia Tours, taking our Cultural Adventure concept to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos and later to Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, and South Korea.
Electricity House - New Flagship HQ
In September, we moved the company to its new flagship Headquarters in Electricity House and the company was renamed Inside Travel Group.
Electricity House has been an iconic city landmark since its inception in the 1930s. The building now has Grade II listed status.
Our beautiful office occupies the ground floor of the building and the staff breakout room features a mural by the artist Dan Kitchener – neatly tying together the Bristol roots of Alastair and Simon, the office’s location and the ITG foundation; Japan.
About Bristol
Named as one of the coolest cities in the world by National Geographic Traveller, the best city to live in the UK by The Times and voted one of the happiest cities to work in by The Guardian, Bristol “has the buzz and culture of a big city while keeping the community feel of a friendly, close-knit town.” Bristol is far more than bridges, balloons, and Banksy, (although these would probably be enough on their own).
Bristol, nestled in the southwest of the United Kingdom, is a vibrant and diverse city that seamlessly blends rich history with a modern atmosphere. With a strong sense of community, Bristol stands as a captivating city that embraces its past while embracing the future.
