About Nagoya
Nagoya is the capital of Aichi Prefecture, and the fourth-largest city in Japan. As of 2109, over 2 million people lived within the designated city area, while over 10 million lived within the greater metropolitan area. Located in the centre of Japan, Nagoya is known as a major aviation and automotive industrial powerhouse, as well as a thriving transportation hub.
Nagoya has a long and rich history, beginning with the creation of Nagoya Castle in 1610 by the famous warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu, who is known as one of the three “Great Unifiers” of Japan. This, coupled with the fact that Nagoya’s ancient Atsuta Shrine was an important waystation along the Tokaido trail during this time, led to the formation of a bustling town.
Owing to the city’s central location within Japan, Nagoya developed into an important industrial center, and although the city suffered extensive damage from air raids in 1945 and then a typhoon in 1959, it was able to rebuild and flourish into the city we know and love today.
